In the opening game of the 2017 Western Conference Finals, the Spurs, playing away from home, surged ahead of the Warriors by as many as 25 points. At that juncture, Leonard had accumulated 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. With less than eight minutes remaining in the third quarter, a three-point attempt saw him land awkwardly on Pachulia's foot, exacerbating a pre-existing injury to his left ankle and forcing him to withdraw from the contest. As Leonard left the court, the Spurs maintained a 21-point lead. However, the Warriors mounted a comeback, securing a 113-111 victory in Game 1. Leonard's absence for the remainder of the series ultimately led to the Spurs being swept 0-4.
